Laila Edwards Biography

Laila Edwards is an American ice hockey player for the University of Wisconsin Badgers and the U.S. women's national team, poised to make history as the first Black woman to represent the United States in Olympic women's ice hockey at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games. Born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, she began figure skating at age 3 before switching to hockey at 5, often playing on boys' teams due to limited girls' programs. At 13, she moved to Bishop Kearney High School in Rochester, New York, for elite training. Edwards debuted for the senior national team in 2023 as its first Black woman player. She earned silver at the 2024 IIHF World Championship and MVP honors, then gold in 2025 while switching to defense. Collegiately, she won NCAA titles in 2023 and 2025, was a 2025 Patty Kazmaier top-three finalist, and led the nation with 35 goals as a junior.
