World Series Winning Manager Jim Leyland to be Honored by the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation

Even in retirement, the honors continue to pile up for former World Series champion manager Jim Leyland. He will receive his latest distinction on Saturday from the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation.

Leyland is one of three honorees and he is being recognized with the Cal Sr. Award. Hall of Fame running back Curtis Martin and former Secretary of State Colin Powell are receiving the Aspire Award.

All three men will be present to collect their trophies at the charity's Aspire Gala that is being hosted at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. It is always one of the largest philanthropic events on the east coast, last year raising $4.4 million.

Leyland's distinguished career in which he won 1,700 games is again being put in the spotlight. He is one of just seven managers to win both the American League and National League pennant and he took the Florida Marlins all the way to a World Series victory in 1997.

Leyland spent a decade early in his career managing the Pittsburgh Pirates and was twice named NL Manager of the Year. He finished his career with an eight-year run on the bench for the Detroit Tigers and was the 2006 AL Manager of the Year.

Leyland also led Team USA to victory at the 2017 World Baseball Classic.  He still serves as a special assistant to the Tigers.
