Keynote speaker Allyson Felix, the most decorated American track athlete in Olympic history, is coming to Milwaukee for Tempo's 16th annual Leadership Event. On November 12, at the Wisconsin Center, Felix will present at the event dedicated to empowering both women and men in positions of leadership. Tempo is Wisconsin's largest professional women's group, with over 800 members.
Felix will discuss her experience as an Olympian, her advocacy for women and childcare, and her business experience. Jennifer Dirks, the president, and Chief Executive Officer of Tempo said the group had been seeking Felix as a speaker before this year's Olympics, noting Felix's advocacy efforts as being in line with Tempo's mission.
Felix is an 11-time Olympic medalist who won gold and bronze at this year’s Tokyo Games. Of her many medals, seven are gold. She earned gold in the women’s 4x400 meter relay and bronze in the women’s 400 meters in Tokyo. The New York Times described Felix as “a fierce advocate in recent years for female athletes, for mothers, and for gender equality,” during this year’s Olympic Games.
Felix was one of the female athletes who publicly criticized Nike for failing to include protections in its sponsorship contracts for pregnant athletes and new mothers. According to a New York Times report, Nike offered Felix 70% less in her contract when she gave birth to her daughter, Camryn. The employer would not promise that she would not face repercussions if she did not perform to her full potential in the months leading up to the birth of her child.
Felix then went on to secure a sponsorship deal with Gap Inc.’s female-focused brand, Athleta. Just earlier this year, she also debuted her own shoe company named Saysh. As she crossed the finish line and won her 11th Olympic medal in Tokyo this year, Felix made a statement wearing shoes made by her own company.
