American Soccer Legends Abby Wambach and Brandi Chastain Share the Stage for Memorable Speaking Engagement

In her post-soccer career, Abby Wambach has become one of the most inspirational figures from the world of sports. Wambach was back sharing her message of empowerment last week and she was joined by another American legend, Brandi Chastain

Wambach and Chastain shared the stage for the speaking engagement at Palo Alto High School's Performing Arts Center. They were talking about Wambach's new book, "Wolfpack: How to Come Together, Unleash Our Power and Change the Game."

The pair talked about shrinking the inequalities that exist between men's and women's professional sports. They particularly addressed the ongoing lawsuit that was filed by the U.S. women's soccer team and deals with gender discrimination.

“This is about respect, and this is about freedom,” Wambach said. “The woman’s national team depicts a sense of freedom, they rail against the stereotypical way women have to comply to how they’re perceived in society. A win for the women’s national team would also be a win for women everywhere.”

Wambach and Chastain were also able to reminisce about their soccer careers. That discussion about their glory days tied back into the topic of the book and an effort to inspire all women to find their own Wolfpack.

Wambach led Team USA for over a decade and scored an international record 184 goals. She was a six-time U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year.

After winning her second Olympic gold medal, Wambach was named the 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year. She also competed in four World Cups and won the tournament in her last attempt in 2016.

Chastain will forever be remembered for inspiring a generation of girls to play soccer when she scored a penalty shootout goal to win the 1999 World Cup. She competed for the U.S. national team from 1988-2004 and earned 192 caps.

In 2013, Chastain was named to the USWNT All-Time Best XI. She is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
