Simone Biles Returns to Olympic Stage to Inspire Beyond Gymnastics

Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast of all-time, chose to participate in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics for reasons other than adding to her gold medal collection. In the aftermath of the sexual abuse scandal surrounding former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, Biles wishes to use her platform as a top sports keynote speaker and endorsement star to also call for reform in the sport she loves.

Hundreds of gymnasts courageously came forward, including her former Team USA teammates McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, and Gabby Douglas. While those three standouts have retired from competition, the sport now rallies around Biles as she chases history in Tokyo and stands for what is good in gymnastics.

"I just feel like everything that happened, I had to come back to the sport to be a voice, to have change happen," Biles said in an interview on TODAY. "Because I feel like if there weren't a remaining survivor in the sport, they would've just brushed it to the side.” "But since I'm still here, and I have quite a social media presence and platform, they have to do something. So I feel like coming back, gymnastics just wasn't the only purpose I was supposed to do.”

Biles aims to put barriers in place in the sport so that no potential gymnast has to go through what she and the others did. She expressed that she wanted to participate in the upcoming Olympics to continue a legendary career after the games were delayed, but that’s when she realized it was about much more than that.

"I don't think I knew it, either, but I feel like gymnastics wasn't the only thing I was supposed to come back for," said Biles.

If Biles defends her all-around title from the 2016 Rio Olympics, she will become the oldest American woman to win Olympic gold at just 24 years old. Although Biles was once a teen gymnastics prodigy in her own right, she’s now a veteran.

"For me, I think it's more stressful whenever I go out and compete because I'm trying to be better than I was at the last meet," said Biles. "So I'm trying to beat myself. And sometimes, you get caught up in that moment.”

Since she wowed fans with her poise in competition, many have decided to book Simone Biles for charity galas, women’s luncheons and diversity events. She is one of the top female endorsement stars in sports, boasting partnerships with Athleta, Beats by Dre and Visa just to name a few.

While she may continue to revolutionize gymnastics on the mat this summer, it is going to be these high-profile speaking and brand ambassador roles that allow her to truly impact the sport into the future.
