Ruthie Bolton Speaks to Students at Kairos Public School Vacaville Academy

The two-time Olympic gold medalist basketball player Ruthie Bolton gave a talk in Vacaville, CA last Friday to a group of elementary school children about having perseverance at the Kairos Public School Vacaville Academy. During her two speeches she told the kids about how it is so much easier to just walk away from the things they may want in life, but it is ok to fight for achieving goals too.

The former WNBA player for the Sacramento Monarchs grew up in a home with 20 siblings in Lucedale, Mississippi and played collegiate basketball for Auburn University alongside one of her sisters, Mae Ola Bolton. She was called to the national team in July of 1991 to play in the World University games and again in 1994 to compete at the World Championships in Sydney, Australia. Then in 1996 Bolton represented the United States at the Olympic games in Atlanta where she was the leading scorer with 21 points in the game against Ukraine.

Bolton told the students at Kairos Public School Vacaville Academy that she wasn't a naturally gifted basketball player at first, and that she was told she was not good enough to be on the Auburn University basketball team. However, she decided to prove them wrong and work extra hard which eventually landed her a spot on the team as a freshman player. The Mississippi native explained to the kids that the most important thing above all else is having the passion and courage to follow their dreams, and that perseverance is what will help them succeed in their goals.
