NFL Legends Roger Staubach and Alan Page Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

NFL legends Roger Staubach and Alan Page received an unprecedented honor on Friday. They were the first former pro football players to be recipients of The Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Seven outstanding people were awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor by President Donald Trump. In addition to Staubach and Page, doctor and philanthropist Miriam, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, rock and roll icon Elvis Presley, baseball legend Babe Ruth and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia were recognized.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is presented to individuals who make meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace or to cultural and other significant public or private endeavors.

Staubach first starred at the Naval Academy, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1963. He then went on to even greater success as he led the rise of the Dallas Cowboys as “America’s Team” in the 1970s.

Staubach won two Super Bowls during his 11 seasons with the Cowboys. He was a six-time Pro Bowler and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Page has had two very separate, but distinct careers. He became one of Minnesota’s favorite sons as a dominant defensive lineman with the Minnesota Vikings’ “Purple People Eaters” in the 1970.

After football, Page went on to a distinguished legal career. He served on the Minnesota State Supreme Court for 22 years before retiring.
