Retired Soccer Star Abby Wambach Gives Commencement Address at Barnard College in May

American soccer icon Abby Wambach is making a visit to Barnard College this spring. She will address the Class of 2018 as the school's commencement speaker on May 16th.

The ceremony will be at Radio City Music Hall in New York City at 4 p.m. The school is bringing Wambach in to speak due to her work fighting for pay equity and gender rights.

In addition to speaking, she will also receive the Barnard Medal of Distinction. Mathematician Katherine Johnson, National Resources Defense Council President Rhea Suh and Pulitzer Prize-winning medalist Anna Quindlen will also receive medals.

Wambach is the all-time leading scorer in women's international soccer history with 184 goals. She won the 2015 FIFA World Cup and led Team USA to two Olympic gold medals.

Wambach was a six-time U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year and the 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year. Despite losing the 2011 World Cup, she won the tournament's Bronze Boot and Silver Ball.

That year, she became the first soccer player to win Associated Press Athlete of the Year. She was named to the 2015 Time 100 list.
