Retired NBA All-Star Kevin Garnett Talks Business Ventures at Sports Marketing Symposium

Kevin Garnett was one of the stars who capitalized on rising popularity and salary caps in the NBA over the last quarter-century. Now, he is taking that platform and reinvesting it in the business world.

Garnett was the featured speaker that closed day one of the Octagon Sports Marketing Symposium in New York City earlier this month. He touched on a variety of topics in his on-stage interview, including his entrepreneurial pursuits in e-sports and basketball.

Garnett recently bought an e-sports team, Triumph, and the well-known basketball tour, Hoop It Up. He is looking to partner both together to create a unique experience, which will take the form of a streetball festival tour this summer.

While Garnett may be a late arrival to the e-sports game, he watched the success and received mentorship from two fellow former basketball stars, Shaquille O'Neal and Rick Fox

While at the symposium, Garnett shared some advice for how other athletes could cross over into the business world.

"Know your strengths," said Garnett. "I wouldn't say that I'm the most savvy in business, but I have a lot of savvy people around me. I'd like to think that everybody on the team, plays a part. I am a person who can stand up and be the leader of it all and be the voice and be the face."

He also continued by sharing his larger vision for business success.

"Things start with vision first. Being able to see where you're going. Being able to create goals. Being able to see interactions and original opportunities when they present themselves. Being able to mix it all. Being able to get you to see it, or get her to see it is huge to me."

Garnett was the ultimate team player for two franchises during his illustrious career. He led the Minnesota Timberwolves to eight straight playoff appearances before winning an NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 2008.

Garnett set many franchise records while in Minnesota and was named NBA MVP in 2004. He was the league's Defensive Player of the Year in the same season that Boston made their run to the championship.

Garnett's 15 All-Star trips are the third-most in NBA history. He was also a nine-time All-NBA performer, 12-time All-Defensive Team member and an Olympic gold medalist.
