Harrison Dillard has received many honors throughout his life, but now the four-time Olympic gold medalist has his own statue.  Baldwin Wallace University placed a life-sized 150-pound bronze sculpture depicting Dillard in prime hurdling form outside the George Finnie Stadium on Saturday. 

The 91-year-old already has his name on the school’s indoor track, but this will be an even greater reminder of his tremendous accomplishments.  After a lifetime of achievement, he was able to put the statue dedication in perspective.

““I don’t know how many of you wake up some time and dream that you’re going to be perpetuated in the form of a statue,” said Dillard during the ceremony. 

Dillard won gold in the 100 meters and 4X100 meter relay in 1948 and took first in the 110-meter hurdles and 4X100 meter relay in 1952.  He was a four-time NCAA champion for the Division III school and has had an irreplaceable impact on people in the state of Ohio ever since.

During World War II, Dillard was a member of the “Buffalo Soldiers”, an all-black infantry group.  He would go on to become a scout and public relations manager for the Cleveland Indians while later running the Cleveland City School District as a business manager.
