NBA Legend Dominique Wilkins Keynotes Alabama Economic Growth Summit

NBA legend Dominique Wilkins is one of the most popular sports figures throughout the South for his tenure with the Atlanta Hawks. However, his reach also extends globally due to the gravity-defying feats he pulled off during his basketball career. 

Wilkins spoke about how his hoops platform set him up for life as the keynote speaker at the Alabama Economic Growth Summit last week. He says that players today are even more set up for a post-basketball life financially. 

Wilkins touched on a variety of things during the moderated speaking engagement, including the investments he has made as an entrepreneur He has a diverse entrepreneurial portfolio, including his own cigar line and involved in a new task management app, Socrates. 

Wilkins also talked about the commitment he has to the Hawks and the preparation that was needed to hold a position in their front office for 20 years. He finally shared his affinity for technology and his belief in the importance of tech education for the next generation. 

“It’s about empowering young people to do something bigger than themselves,” Wilkins said. “Technology is the wave of the world. We have to give these young kids as many options as we can.”

Wilkins was selected for nine NBA All-Star Games. He is best remembered for winning the Slam Dunk Contest in 1985 and 1990, inspiring an entire generation of basketball fans. 

In 1986, Wilkins led the league in scoring and was named to the All-NBA First Team. He was selected as a Second Team or Third Team member six other times. 

Wilkins is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame. His jersey is retired by the Hawks and a statue of him sits outside State Farm Arena.
