Inspirational Athlete Shaquem Griffin Shines at NFL Combine

It was quite the weekend for NFL Draft hopeful Shaquem Griffin. Those who may not have known much about his story, certainly found out more as Griffin dazzled at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

At the age of four, Griffin had his left hand amputated due to amniotic band syndrome. He has had to defy the odds and silence naysayers to become one of the most productive college football players in the country.

Griffin shot up draft boards overnight with his performance at the Combine. He put up 20 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press while using a prosthetic on Saturday and then clocked a record-setting 4.38 40-yard-dash time the following day.

Prior to the workout, Griffin anticipated doing just six reps on the bench, but he was stirred on by an excited audience of fellow players and team executives. His 40 time was the fastest recorded for a linebacker since the NFL Network started keeping track of times in 2003.

Shaquem Griffin's NFL Combine Bench Press Workout:

Griffin had already made waves with NFL personnel evaluators after being named practice player of the week at the Senior Bowl in January. He seems poised to join his twin brother Shaquill, who plays cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks, in the pros.

Griffin played with his brother at the University of Central Florida. He was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2016 before helping lead the Knights to an undefeated 13-0 campaign and Peach Bowl win over Auburn this past season.

Griffin was a second-team All-American in 2017 and a two-time first-team All-AAC pick in his career. He was also named the Defensive MVP of the Peach Bowl.

Off the field, Griffin has been a source of encouragement and inspiration for people with disabilities. In the lead-up to the Peach Bowl, he met with a child who was an Auburn fan who also had amniotic band syndrome.

Griffin has also visited with people who are beneficiaries of a UCF engineering program that has successfully developed prosthetic limbs from 3D printing. There is no question that he will continue to be a powerful voice for many as his football journey continues in the NFL.
