Former Heisman Winner Doug Flutie's Autism Foundation Has Record Grant Cycle

Former Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie started the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism in 1998 as a way to honor his son who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. The charity just had a record grant cycle and is awarding $50,000 to five different Florida organizations.

It is the largest amount of money the Flutie Foundation has handed out since the family relocated to Massachusetts. The organizations that are benefiting are primarily based in Brevard County.

Some of the biggest projects these grants will help fund include a Behavior Intervention Program at the Space Coast Early Intervention Center, direct family support for Spring Forward for Autism, Inc., and social enterprise job coaching at Promise, Inc. Nemours Children's will also receive funding for pre and post-op rooms that are sensory-friendly.

The country first well in love with Flutie's relationship with his son during the retired quarterback's breakthrough 1998 season. He was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year and selected to the Pro Bowl.

Despite not having started an NFL game in nine years prior to that campaign, Flutie went on to play in the league for seven more seasons. He first had success as a pro in the CFL, where he won three Grey Cups and was selected as CFL Most Outstanding Player six times.

Flutie became a household name in 1984 when he won the Heisman Trophy at Boston College and completed an iconic Hail Mary play in a game that season against Miami. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
