The 20th annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet takes place tonight. The keynote speaker is former Major League Baseball player and broadcaster, Tom Paciorek.
The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Wichita. There will be several trophies handed out, including the Johnny Bench Award.
The banquet honors athletes from the high school, junior college, college and professional ranks. The event is being put on by the Greater Wichita Sports Commission.
Paciorek played 18 big league seasons with six different franchises. Before becoming a major leaguer, he was part of the University of Houston team that went to the finals of the 1967 College World Series.
Paciorek is just one of three players in Cougars baseball history to have his number retired. In 2016, he was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
Paciorek's greatest pro season came in 1981, when he made the All-Star team and finished third in the American League with a .326 batting average. After retiring in 1987, he became a color analyst for several different major league teams.
