Female Pioneers Jen Welter and Sarah Thomas Meet on the Field in the NFL Preseason

In the male-dominated world of the NFL, a historic moment between two women took place during the first week of preseason action.  The league’s first female coach, Jen Welter, met up with the first full-time female official, Sarah Thomas.

The two shook hands prior to the Arizona Cardinals-Kansas City Chiefs preseason opener.  It was a Kodak moment for photographers trying to catch a picture of the two recent progressive moves  that have gone down in the NFL.

Welter is on a six-week coaching internship with the Cardinals.  She is helping with the inside linebackers.

Welter is no stranger to firsts.  She was the first women to play a position on the field in a men’s pro game with the Texas Revolution and the following year took up a coaching position with the Indoor Football League Team.

Thomas was hired by the NFL this summer.  She is also the first woman to officiate in major college football game.

In 1999, Thomas started working high school football.  She rose through the ranks working Conference USA football, bowl games, and officiating in a Big Ten stadium.
