Endorsement Star Katie Ledecky Looks to Cement Her Olympic Legacy

It is not easy to be compared to a legend like Michael Phelps, but after winning a gold medal at London 2012 and five golds at the 2015 World Championships, Katie Ledecky was well her way to gaining the kind of acclaim reserved for the most decorated Olympian of all-time. After four golds at the Rio Games, Ledecky firmly lived up to the hype.

With her championship pedigree cemented, another area Ledecky became comparable to Phelps in is the endorsement market. In 2018, she signed her first professional deal, a seven million contract with the sportswear company, TYR.

Ledecky was already a brand spokesperson for Adidas and has had endorsements from Panasonic and Visa. She was still an amateur after the 2016 Olympics, staying eligible to go to school and swim at Stanford.

Now she could really be in line for a pay day.

“I'm really committed to partnering with brands that I believe in, that I use their products, I like their products, and that are making a difference in the world,” Ledecky told Yahoo Finance Live.

While Ledecky is the kind of personality that brands crave, she will also have to match her celebrity as a brand ambassador in the pool. Even with the challenges that COVID provided to her training, she excelled at the recent TYR Pro Swim Series race, winning four freestyle events.

Ledecky plans to compete in the same four distances this summer, including the recently introduced 1,500m freestyle event.

“The first couple of months during the pandemic, I had to swim in an outdoor backyard pool, but I'm back in my normal training environment, Ledecky said. “I’m training really hard and working towards Tokyo.”
