Eight-Time MLB All-Star Darryl Strawberry Named Keynote Speaker at Non-Profit Dinner

Next week, baseball great Darryl Strawberry will be in Grand Rapids, Michigan to speak at a local non-profit’s dinner.  Strawberry is the keynote speaker on October 15th at the Wedgewood Christian Services 55th Annual Anniversary Dinner.

The event will be held at the Amway Grand Plaza in the Ambassador Ballroom and begin at 7:00 p.m.  Wedgewood Christian Services help children and families deal with an array of issues.

Strawberry is a unique baseball success story.  He came up to much hype with the New York Mets in the 1980s and proceeded to make eight straight National League All-Star teams.

Strawberry also led the Mets to a World Series title in 1986 and was the NL home run leader in 1988.  Despite his tremendous early accolades, he struggled with substance abuse issues and was suspended from baseball several times.

Strawberry was able to overcome his demons to help the New York Yankees win three World Series in the late 1990s.  He also beat colon cancer in time to play one last year with the Yankees in 1999.

Now, Strawberry is an ordained minister and operator of the Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center.  He frequently preaches to prison inmates and has a new marriage advice book, The Imperfect Marriage, which he wrote with his wife Tracy.
