Des Moines Register Announces Tennis Great Venus Williams as Speaker for Sports Awards

Tennis great Venus Williams has left an undeniable impact on the sports world. She will talk about her remarkable career this spring at the Des Moines Register Sports Awards. 

The banquet takes place on June 23rd at the Wells Fargo Arena. At the third annual event, over 750 student-athletes from around the state will be honored for their achievements. 

Individual tickets are $35, students tickets are $25 and a family four-pack can be purchased for $112. As Sports Awards speaker, Williams is following in the footsteps of fellow sports icons Peyton Manning and Shaquille O'Neal

After over two decades in the sport, Williams is still currently eighth in the WTA singles rankings. She has had tremendous longevity and has played in a record 75 Grand Slam singles tournaments, winning seven of them. 

Williams has been ranked number one in the world on three occasions for a total of 11 weeks. She has also been a dominant doubles player when teamed with her sister, fellow tennis superstar Serena

The Williams sisters have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals. Williams five Olympic medals tie her for the record of most medals won by a tennis player.
