Coaching Legend Muffet McGraw Talks Women's Leadership at Notre Dame Alumni Event

Coaching legend Muffet McGraw is one of the top speakers from sports on the topic of women's leadership. That was the focus of her presentation on Wednesday night when she visited a Notre Dame alumni group in South Carolina.

McGraw was the keynote speaker at the Universal Notre Dame Celebration at the Country Club of Hilton Head. Her visit was a way to honor the club's community service work.

McGraw's devotion to promoting equality came through during the course of the talk.

“I’m always in favor of promoting women and empowering women, and we need more women in leadership roles," said McGraw. "We need more women to be role models for these young kids coming out, and there are so many men in coaching that it’s hard for them to look up and see somebody like them, and that’s what I want is more women across the country in every line of business, in Hollywood, in every occupation to see more women in charge."

McGraw is a Fighting Irish legend, having just capped off her 32nd season leading the women's basketball program. Under her leadership, Notre Dame has been to nine Final Fours and seven national title games.

The Irish won national championships in 2001 and 2018 and they have made 22 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. McGraw currently ranks seventh all-time among women's college basketball coaches with 923 wins.

McGraw has been a four-time AP Coach of the Year. She is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
