Track & Field Champion to Offer a Message of Resilience and Advocate for Early Cancer Screenings
Chaunté Lowe is set to be the keynote speaker at the 31st annual Women and Wellness Luncheon hosted by VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Jefferson Hotel on February 3rd in Richmond, Virginia. The annual event, going strong for over three decades, has raised more than $5 million to support important cancer research focusing on improving women’s overall health.
Lowe is a retired American high jumper and four-time Olympian (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016). She earned the 2008 Olympic bronze medal, the 2005 World Championships silver medal, and the 2012 World Indoor gold medal. Lowe set three American records, including an indoor mark of 2.02m, and won multiple national titles. Rising from a challenging childhood marked by poverty and instability in California, she excelled at Georgia Tech, becoming the first Yellow Jacket woman to qualify for the Olympics. A mother of three and breast cancer survivor, who was diagnosed with aggressive triple-negative in 2019, undergoing chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, Lowe demonstrated remarkable resilience by training for a potential 2021 Olympic return during treatment.
“We are thrilled to have Chaunté Lowe as our keynote speaker,” says Women and Wellness Luncheon chair Farrah Massenburg. “Her story includes the critical theme of self-advocacy in women’s health, and her experience of training for the Olympics while undergoing chemotherapy is a truly powerful testament.”
