Basketball Legend Oscar Robertson Named First Speaker in Indiana State University Series

Before a lot of the modern greats of basketball that became household names, there was Oscar Robertson.  Those at Indiana State will get a chance to learn from the tremendous life journey “The Big O” has traveled on September 14th.

Robertson is the first speaker in ISU’s 2015-16 University Speaker Series.  He will be followed by author Hector Tobar, explorer Alexandra Cousteau, Paralympian Bonnie St. John, author Sarah Vowell, and business tycoon Patty Duke.

Robertson may have been the NBA’s first truly great player.  He is the first and only man to ever average a triple-double in a season.

His career averages of 25.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 9.5 assists are also impressive.  Robertson was a 12-time NBA All-Star, made nine All-NBA first teams, and led the league in assists six times.

He was able to win an MVP award with the Cincinnati Royals in 1964 and an NBA title with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1971.  His number is retired by both the Bucks and the Sacramento Kings.

Most importantly, Robertson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980.  He continues to be an active ambassador for the game today.
