Baseball's Iron Man Cal Ripken Jr. Keynotes ASI Orlando

Because of his determination on the baseball field and post-playing career business success, Cal Ripken Jr. is a favorite get to speak to corporate audiences. He recently addressed the crowd as the keynote speaker at ASI Orlando.

Ripken spoke to the room full of advertising professionals about perseverance. He talked about tips that he learned throughout his career and the importance of self-evaluation.

“You need to set goals, but you also need to be honest, look in the mirror, and be willing to practice what your weaknesses are. I saw so many players who only wanted to practice their strengths and I guess they were embarrassed to work on their weaknesses in front of everybody else,” Ripken said. “I always worked on things because I wanted to get better.”

Ripken had several fun anecdotal stories during the 45-minute presentation that brought his time on the diamond to life. He closed the speech by sharing a famous quote from former President Teddy Roosevelt that he has always cherished, “You can’t accomplish anything from the sidelines. You have to have the courage to stay in the game.”

As the holder of a 2,632 consecutive games played streak, Ripken is a model for professionals everywhere. He spent his entire 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles and was selected to 19 All-Star games.

Ripken was named American League MVP in 1983 and 1992. In his first MVP season, he helped lead the Orioles to a World Series victory.

Ripken is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame. He now grows the game at the grassroots level as the President and CEO of Ripken Baseball, Inc.
