Baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith Keynotes Boys & Girls Club Event

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City has made a significant investment in youth sports. Baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith also is passionate about making sure kids stay active.

That made Smith the perfect choice to serve as keynote speaker Wednesday night at their fundraiser. Proceeds went towards the ten sports programs offered at six area clubs.

Hundreds of people showed up to hear from Smith and support the Boys & Girls Club. The former star shortstop also met with kids during the day and shared his story.

Smith is arguably the best defensive shortstop in baseball history. He was a 13-time Gold Glove winner who set major league records for assists and double plays.

Smith also played a National League-record 2,511 games at shortstop. He was a 15-time All-Star who compiled 2,460 hits and stole 580 bases.

Smith helped lead the St. Louis Cardinals to three World Series and won a championship in 1982. In addition to being in the Baseball Hall of Fame, he was an inaugural member of the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame and has his #1 jersey retired by the franchise.
