Athlete Speakers Congratulates Minnesota Twins Star Joe Mauer on Retirement

One of the best catchers in modern baseball history decided to hang it up this week. Athlete Speakers extends congratulations to Minnesota Twins standout Joe Mauer on retirement.

Over 15 years, Mauer built a career that could have him bound for the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. The six-time All-Star was a three-time American League batting champion and the 2009 AL MVP.

The most unique thing about Mauer is that he racked up all 2,123 hits playing for his hometown team. The Twins originally selected him with the top pick in the 2001 draft out of St. Paul's Cretin-Durham Hall High School, the same school attended by another Minnesota legend, Paul Molitor.

Mauer expressed gratitude for the community support he received over the years in a full-page ad that ran Sunday in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"Thank you, Minnesota Twins, and thank you, fans, for making my career as special and memorable as it was," said Mauer. "Because of you I can leave the game I love with a full and grateful heart."

There were indications towards the end of the season that Mauer may step away from the game. On September 30, he doubled in his final at-bat and symbolically put on his catcher's gear to take one more turn behind the plate in the top of the ninth inning.

The moment was particularly special because Mauer had not been a catcher since 2013 due to injury. He finishes out as the Twins career leader in times on base and doubles and is second in hits to Kirby Puckett.

Mauer plans to spend time with his 5-year old twin daughters, wife Maddie and a third child they are currently expecting. He is also available for appearances and speaking engagements.
