Olympic Legend Billy Mills to Give Bacone College Commencement Speech

Bacone College in Oklahoma is bringing a commencement speaker in this weekend that is uniquely qualified to share a message with the graduates.  Olympian Billy Mills will speak at Saturday’s 2:00 p.m. ceremony at the Muskogee Civic Center.

If those in the area wish to attend, the graduation is open to the public.

Mills is the only Olympian in the Western Hemisphere to ever win the 10,000-meter race.  His Native American background is especially meaningful at Bacone, a school that was originally founded as Indian University in 1880.

Mills captured his gold medal in Tokyo in 1964.  He was raised on a South Dakota reservation and orphaned when he was 12 years old.

Despite the obstacles, Mills went on to success on the track and in life.  He is a Spokesman for the Christian Relief Services and has helped the organization raise over $500 million.

President Barack Obama bestowed the Presidential Citizens Medal upon Mills in 2013.  He is a member of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and was named the best athlete of the 20th century from South Dakota by Sports Illustrated.
