Robert Yates Biography

Robert Yates is a well-known NASCAR engine builder. Yates also owned the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team Yates Racing. Robert Yates attended Wilson Technical College where he earned a mechanical engineering degree. Yates went on to buy a NASCAR race team from Harry Ranier in 1988 and his first driver was Davey Allison, son of NASCAR legend and Hall of Famer Bobby Allison. In the team’s first ever race, run at Daytona International Speedway for the 1988 Daytona 500, the team finished second. Yates Racing expanded to two race teams with Dale Jarrett and Ernie Irvan in the year of 1996, with Jarrett going on to start the season with his new team with a win in the Daytona 500. Robert Yates’ highest accomplishment came when he won the 1999 series Championship as an owner with driver Dale Jarrett. Yates later retired after 2007, handing the race team to his son. Later, Yates returned in 2010 to form a new company, Robert Yates Racing Engines.
