Mikaela Shiffrin Biography

Mikaela Shiffrin became the youngest slalom champion in Olympic alpine skiing history in when she captured gold at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics at the age of 18. Shiffrin began skiing at a young age on the slopes of Vail, Colorado. After moving to New Hampshire at the age of eight she continued to hit the slopes and sharpen her skills. At the age of 15 she won the Nor-Am Cup super combined race in 2010 and finished eighth in the FIS-level race. She followed that up with a runnerup finish in the Super-G, a third place finish in the GS and a win in the slalom at the next three Nor-Am races. After slalom race wins at Sunday River, Maine and a bronze medal performance at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships she was named one of ESPNW’s Impact 25. In 2011 she won the U.S. National Championship in the slalom, making her the youngest skier ever to claim the national alpine crown. She’d go on to capture gold at the 2013 World Championships in the slalom, setting up her gold medal performance at the 2014 Olympic games. After the Olympics she returned home an American hero and has since made appearances on several popular television and radio shows.
