Marcin Gortat Biography

Marcin Gortat is a well-known NBA center that has played for the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, and Washington Wizards.  Gortat began his career as a useful backup for NBA All-Star Dwight Howard in Orlando.  When it was clear he would be more valuable than an occasionally used reserve, he was traded to the Suns.  Gortat thrived following the trade and in his time with Phoenix and Washington has yet to average under double digit scoring in any season.  He is currently part of a resurgent Wizards franchise that is one of the best in the Eastern Conference.  In 2014, Gortat resigned with Washington on a reported five-year, 60 million dollar deal.  Prior to his time in the NBA, he played in Poland and Germany.  Gortat is the first person of Polish descent to appear in the NBA Finals.  His father, Janusz, was a two-time Olympic bronze medalist in boxing and his mother played volleyball for the national team.
