Lou Holtz Biography

Lou Holtz is one of the most fun-loving and entertaining college football analysts in the business. As a member of the ESPN broadcast team, Holtz provides insightful analysis of the day’s biggest college football stories like no one else can. His knowledge of the game stems from a football career that spanned over 50 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach at the college and NFL levels. Holtz got his start in college football as a linebacker at Kent State University, where he played from 1956 to 1957. After graduating in 1959 he became a grad assistant at Iowa and then served as an assistant coach at William & Mary, Connecticut, South Carolina and Ohio State from1961 to 1968. In 1969 he was hired as the head coach at William & Mary and then served as the head coach at NC State from 1972 to 1975, where he led the Wolfpack to an ACC title in 1973 and earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 1972. After the 1975 season he made the jump to the NFL and served as the head coach of the New York Jets for one season before returning to the college game as the head coach at the University of Arkansas. During his first season as the head coach of the Razorbacks he led his team to an 11-1 record and earned National Coach of the Year honors. After seven seasons at Arkansas he headed to Notre Dame for ten seasons, won a National Championship in 1988 and won his second National Coach of the Year award. He finished his career as the head coach at the University of South Carolina from 1999 to 2004 and was named SEC coach of the Year in 2000. Coach Holtz was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and has since written 10 books on sports, coaching, mentorship, and leadership while serving as an analyst at ESPN.
