Women’s Boxing Pioneer Christy Martin Keynotes Concord University Foundation Dinner Next Month

As a pioneer in women's boxing, Christy Martin has a unique story to tell. On April 4th, she will keynote Concord's University Foundation Charleston dinner.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Charleston Marriott Town Center. Martin is an alum of Concord University and a native of southern West Virginia.

She graduated with a bachelor's degree in education. Proceeds raised will be used to fund scholarships and other projects on campus.

Martin posted a 49-7 career record with a career that spans over two decades. She legitimized the sport of boxing for women and posted 31 career knockouts.

One of the most significant fights of Martin's career took place on Showtime in 1996 against Deirdre Gogarty. After the decision victory, she graced the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Martin had another major fight with Laila Ali in 2003 although she came up short in the bout. She was the first female boxer inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame last year.
