Toronto Maple Leafs Select American Auston Matthews with Number One Pick in the NHL Draft

Last Friday, the Toronto Maple Leafs made history with their number one overall pick in the NHL Draft.  The Maple Leafs selected American Auston Matthews at one.

Matthews, a Phoenix native, is the first top selection in the NHL to come from a Sun Belt market.  Impressively, he is just the seventh player from the U.S. ever selected number one and the first since Patrick Kane in 2007.

Additionally, Matthews led a draft that saw a record 12 American drafted in the first round.  He is certainly just what the star-craved Toronto franchise needs.

Matthews spent last season in the Swiss National League.  In 36 games, he racked up 24 goals and 46 points.

That performance led to Matthews winning the NLA Rising Star Award and finishing as runner-up in league MVP voting.  At this May's World Championships, he led Team USA in scoring with six goals and nine points in ten games.

Matthews has been a staple in the U.S. national team system and set a record with 116 points during his second season with the U-18 team.  He also won back-to-back golds with the U-18 U.S. team in 2014 and 2015.
