SportsCenter Host Scott Van Pelt Named Commencement Speaker at Maryland’s Journalism School

SportsCenter host Scott Van Pelt often make references to his alma mater, the University of Maryland, on air. As one of the school's most high-profile alums, he is getting an opportunity that few ever receive.

Van Pelt will be the commencement speaker for the school's Philip Merrill College of Journalism on May 19th.  The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. at Ritchie Coliseum.

Merrill College seniors actually selected Van Pelt to speak.  There is no doubt he will share some stories about when he was a Radio-Television-Film major at UM.

Van Pelt has injected a new energy in ESPN's popular studio show SportsCenter.  He is teh anchor of the midnight edition of the show and brings his unique perspective on each night's happenings in sports. 

Additionally, Van Pelt is heavily involved as a host in the network's coverage of major golf events, including the Masters and The Open Championship.  His background in that sport goes back to before ESPN when he was an anchor and reporter for The Golf Channel from 1994-2000.

Van Pelt originally joined ESPN as a golf reporter in 2001, but his role quickly expanded.  In addition to benig a mainstay on SportsCenter, he has also hosted shows on ESPN Radio.
