Pittsburgh Pirates Star Andrew McCutchen Wins Roberto Clemente Award

It is fitting that a dynamic talent and star Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder should follow in the footsteps of Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente in more ways than one.  Centerfielder Andrew McCutchen has certainly fit the bill during his career.

This past weekend, McCutchen received the Roberto Clemente Award from Major League Baseball during Game 3 of the World Series.  The trophy is handed out to the player who best represents the league on and off the field.

McCutchen does significant work with Pirates charities through “Cutch’s Crew”.  He also works with local groups like the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

On the field, McCutchen may be Pittsburgh’s best player since Clemente.  He has been to five straight All-Star games and won the National League MVP award in 2013.

McCutchen has also led a revival of the Pirates franchise.  The club has won at least 88 games in each of the past three seasons, finishing in second place in the NL Central each time.

This season, Pittsburgh was one of two NL wild card participants after a 98-win campaign.  McCutchen hit .292 with 23 homers and 96 RBI.
