New York Mets Outfielder Curtis Granderson Holds Youth Camp Back Home in Chicago

This weekend, New York Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson went back to his roots to do some good for local kids.  He held his Grand Kids Youth Clinic Saturday at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

UIC is Granderson’s alma mater and where he also donated half the money to build the baseball stadium that now bears his name.  Over 200 kids turned out to get a two-hour lesson on baseball fundamentals.

The campers also went home with a camp t-shirt, photo with Granderson, and a free lunch.  Each year, Granderson hosts the camp in conjunction with his foundation.

Many questions at the camp centered around the Mets postseason run, where Granderson helped New York topple the hometown Chicago Cubs on the way to the World Series.  He was a reliable force out the leadoff spot during the playoffs and hit three home runs in the Fall Classic.

Granderson is a three-time All-Star and probably had his best season with the New York Yankees in 2011.  He hit .262 with 41 home runs, 119 RBI and finished fourth in American League MVP voting.

Granderson played the first six seasons of his career with the Detroit Tigers.  The Tigers originally selected him in the second round of the 2002 MLB Draft.
