New Orleans Saints Backup QB Luke McCown Stars in National Verizon Commercial

It’s not often that the backup quarterback gets the opportunity to bask in the spotlight.  New Orleans Saints second stringer Luke McCown got his opportunity to shine last Thursday night with an ad spot that ran during the season opener.

McCown was featured in a commercial for Verizon.  The 12-year veteran poked fun of his backup status in the spot while referencing the cellular company’s backup generators.

Saints starter Drew Brees is already a Verizon spokesperson making the partnership with McCown a natural fit.

McCown has made nine starts in his NFL career and thrown for just over 2,000 yards.  He probably had his best success for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in spot duty in 2007.

In addition to his time with the Bucs, McCown also made starts with the Cleveland Browns and was named the starter for the Jacksonville Jaguars leading into the 2010 season.  The Browns originally selected him out of Louisiana Tech in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL Draft.

McCown had a prolific career for the Bulldogs and ranks second in school history in most meaningful passing statistics.  His older brother, Josh, is also an NFL quarterback and currently plays in Cleveland.
