New England Patriots Pro Bowler Matthew Slater Speaks at Pine Street Inn Graduation

Matthew Slater has worked his way up to become a vital part of the New England Patriots special teams unit. He talked about his journey as the speaker last Friday at the Pine Street Inn graduation.

Pine Street Inn is a New England-based provider of permanent housing, emergency shelter, and job training for the homeless and formerly homeless. Graduates at the ceremony ranged in age from their 20s to their 60s.

Slater focused on the lesson of adversity that football has taught him. He paralleled that to challenges the graduates have faced and challenged their loved ones in attendance to keep encouraging them.

The Patriots originally selected Slater in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He has gone on to be the most prominent special teams player in the league and he has been selected to six Pro Bowls.

Slater is also a four-time first-team All-Pro and he has helped New England to victories in Super Bowls XLIX and LI. In February, he was the recipient of the Bart Starr Award for his character and leadership on and off the field.

Slater played college football at UCLA and graduated with a degree in political science and history. He was a standout kick returner, being named first-team All-Pac 10 and a first-team All-American in 2007.
