Marvin Jones Speaks at SodTalk Prior to his FSU Jersey Retirement Ceremony

This was a big weekend in Tallahassee for former Florida State linebacker Marvin Jones.  Jones became the 10th Seminole to have his jersey retired during the Saturday’s game against Miami.

He also spoke in front of a large crowd at FSU’s Sod Cemetery and shared some of his favorite stories from his playing career.  These SodTalk presentations, sponsored by the Tallahassee Democrat, feature Noles greats and are held 90 minutes before every home football game.

The Sod Cemetery is one of the more unique traditions in college football.  It holds turf from major road victories throughout program history.

Jones’ junior season in 1992 was a special one.  He won the Butkus and Lombardi awards while also finishing fourth in Heisman Trophy voting.

It was also the second year Jones was named a consensus All-American.  During both his sophomore and junior campaigns, FSU won at least ten games and the ACC title.

Jones went on to a ten-year career at linebacker for the New York Jets and was named a first-team All-Pro in 2000.  He retired in 2003 with over 1,000 tackles during his time in the NFL.
