Inspirational Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad Speaks at Washington University

Washington University recently hosted inspirational Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad. She was their latest speaker in the Student Union's Trending Topics series. 

The event took place on November 13th at the Graham Chapel and was put together by the Muslim Students Association. She spoke about her journey that led her to Olympic fencing. 

Members of the Washington University Fencing Club were also in attendance. Muhammad participated in a question and answer session with MSA Vice President Amal Haque. 

Muhammad became the first Muslim woman to wear a traditional hijab while competing for the United States in the Olympics. She won a bronze medal in team sabre in 2016. 

Muhammad has been with Team USA Fencing sine 2010 and has won five World Championship medals. She has gone on to be a sports ambassador and has served on the State Department's Empowering Women and Girls Through Sport Initiative. 

Muhammad has a bachelor's degree in international relations and African and African-American studies from Duke University. She was recently honored at Glamour's Woman of the Year Summit.
