Iconic U.S. Soccer Player Abby Wambach Announces her Retirement

One of today’s sports icons is stepping away and clearing a path for a new generation of stars.  Soccer star Abby Wambach is hanging up her cleats after 14 years with the U.S. women’s national team.

Wambach will officially call it quits following the conclusion of World Cup Victory Tour friendlies December 16th.  The 35-year-old made her announcement on Tuesday following the team’s trip to the White House to be honored by President Obama.

There is no questioning the indelible impact Wambach has left on the game.  She is international soccer’s all-time leading scorer, with 184 goals in 252 matches.

Wambach has led Team USA to an epic haul of hardware, including the 2008 and 2012 Olympic gold medals and this past summer’s World Cup triumph.  In 2012, she was named FIFA World Player of the Year.

In the 2011 World Cup, Wambach’s stoppage time header kept the U.S. alive against Brazil and became the stuff of legends. Despite the squad coming up short that year in the final, she still took home the tournament’s Bronze Boot and Silver Ball.

This year, Wambach was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world.  Even in retirement, she will certainly have a full list of opportunities in and out of the soccer world.
