Former NFL Wide Receiver Bobby Johnson Talks with Community Speaks Out Friday

Former NFL wide receiver Bobby Johnson had his stellar career cut short due to problems with addiction. Now, he is traveling the country to aid others in their recovery.

On Friday, Johnson will be speaking for at an event for Community Speaks Out. The meet-and-greet steak dinner and fundraiser takes place at the Birdseye Cafe in New London, Connecticut.

Johnson actually arrives in town today and will take part in a Community Speaks Out support group at the Groton Public Library. He is making a variety of appearances at high schools and other groups Thursday and Friday morning.

Johnson had a promising NFL career when he joined the New York Giants from the University of Kansas in 1984. In 1986, he caught a crucial pass on 4th and 17 in Week 12 against the Minnesota Vikings.

That play set up a game-winning 33-yard field goal. Johnson is credited with turning around the season and propelling the Giants to a victory in Super Bowl XXI.

Unfortunately, Johnson never played in the NFL again due to his drug addiction. He even sold his Super Bowl ring to fund his habit, but he has currently been sober for 14 years and now helps others overcome their personal obstacles.
