Former Major League Pitcher Jim Deshaies Gives SUNY Potsdam Commencement Address

The State University of New York at Potsdam held their commencement proceedings on Saturday. Over, 1,000 students received their diplomas and were recognized as members of the Class of 2017.

Former major league pitcher and current broadcaster Jim Deshaies was chosen to speak to the graduates. He has a local tie to the area, growing up in Massena before embarking on a successful career in baseball.

Deshaies' daughter, Kelly, was also graduating from SUNY Potsdam with a bachelor of arts degree in environmental studies. He shared some of the struggles he had in his own life and urged the students to embrace whatever pitfalls lie ahead.

Deshaies made his mark on baseball with several significant achievements. He became the 1000th person to play for the New York Yankees when he was called up to the big leagues in 1984.

In 1985, Deshaies was traded to the Houston Astros and a year later he set a then-franchise rookie record for wins with 12. That season, he set a major league record by striking out the first eight batters he faced in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Deshaies played for the Astros for seven seasons and spent time with four other franchises before retiring in 1995. From 1997-2012, he was part of the Houston television broadcast team and he is currently the TV analyst for the Chicago Cubs.
