Former College Football Coach Dennis Franchione Speaks at Lamar Coaches Clinic

The Lamar University football program has a new direction under first-year coach Mike Shultz. They recently hosted a coaches clinic with some of the bigger names in the sport serving as speakers.

Former head coach Dennis Franchione was one of those special guests who addressed attendees. The clinic took place April 7-8 on campus.

Another retired college coaching great, Larry Coker, also spoke. Tickets to attend the two-day session were $25 and also included access to the spring ball position meetings and Saturday's practice.

Franchione worked his way up the ranks and eventually was in charge of five different Division 1 programs. He is one of the coaches credited with laying the groundwork for the modern success of the TCU football program.

Franchione spent three seasons as the head coach of the Horned Frogs and led them to back-to-back Western Athletic Conference titles. He went on to coach at Alabama for two years before taking over at Texas A&M.

Franchione also had two stints as the head coach at Texas State and ended his career by piloting the program through the transition from FCS to FBS football. Overall, his team's went 213-135-2 and won eight conference championships.
