Former Boxing Champion Michael Spinks Speaks at Special Event in Philadelphia

Not many often get to hear Michael Spinks recount stories about his iconic boxing career. However, some lucky visitors to Warmdaddy's restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Wednesday night did get that privilege.

Spinks was honored with The Literary Cafe's "A Philly Salute." The citation was issued by the Philadelphia City Council.

During the event, Spinks went down memory lane, even tracing some of his boxing success to a difficult upbringing in St. Louis, Missouri. He answered several questions from the audience and assembled media.

Spinks went 93-7 as an amateur boxer and won the middleweight gold medal at the 1976 Olympics. He turned professional and became one of the best light heavyweight fighters of all-time.

Spinks was the undisputed light heavyweight champion of the world from 1983-85. He then moved up to heavyweight, defeated Larry Holmes twice and reigned as lineal heavyweight champion from 1985-88.

Spinks won the first 31 fights of his career before falling to Mike Tyson in his final bout in 1988. He is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
