David Denson is Affiliated Baseball's First Openly-Gay Player

Milwaukee Brewers minor leaguer David Denson is the latest athlete to publicly share his personal truth and become a trailblazer of sorts for the revelation.  Denson is the first openly-gay player in affiliated baseball.

He came out to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel prior to a game with his Pioneer League Helena Brewers.  Those at the game applauded his announcement and the news even reached the big league Brewers clubhouse, where manager Craig Counsell told his team the story.

Denson’s willingness to share comes on the heels of independent leaguer Sean Conroy becoming the first openly gay professional baseball player.  Baseball has also made strides with the LGBT community, appointing former major leaguer Billy Bean at the MLB’s Ambassador for Inclusion.

The 20-year-old Denson was drafted in the 15th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of  South Hills High School in California.  He has just started to round into his own as a player for Helena.

After being sent to the squad earlier this season, Denson made the Pioneer League All-Star Game.  He got MiLB.com’s Top Star for the game after going 2-3 with a pinch-hit homerun.
