Brittney Griner Awarded with HRC's Visibility Award

At the HRC’s Houston Gala on April 11, WNBA star Brittney Griner was given the HRC’s Visibility Award due to her vocal advocacy for LGBT rights. Ever since she publicly came out as gay in April 2013, she has been working hard to promote equality people of all sexualities. The award ceremony went especially well and Griner spoke with the media about what some of her personal goals in this section of her life have been.

The 2014 WNBA Champion was once rated as the nation’s #1 female high school basketball player, which made it an easy transition for her to play for Baylor after her graduation. In 2012 she earned the Best Female Athlete ESPY Award and was drafted by the Mercury in the first round as the first overall pick. The two-time WNBA All Star announced that she was proud of the open-mindness of her home state, Texas, and applauded the Texas Wins program for making sure there is a fair chance for people with a lot of talent to enter a sports career.

Griner was given entitled with this year’s HRC Visibility Award  for all that she has done to fight against discrimination, and she has teamed up with major sports organizations such as the NBA, WNBA, and NASCAR to get the message of equality out. In addition to that, she is the first openly gay athlete to get an endorsement gig with Nike.
